Cyprus to Launch First Solar Electric Passenger Vessels by 2027 in Partnership with Indian Shipbuilder
Cyprus is preparing to introduce its first solar electric passenger vessels by April 2027 following a cooperation agreement with Indian shipbuilder Navalt. The memorandum of understanding, signed in Larnaca by Zacharias Siokouros of the Marine and Maritime Institute and Navalt CEO Sandith Thandasherry, aims to advance green shipping technologies and electric propulsion in Cyprus.
The partnership seeks to reduce emissions from maritime transport with the launch of solar electric vessels. These vessels could either be built entirely in India and assembled in Cyprus or produced locally through the transfer of technical knowledge. Additionally, the collaboration will explore the development of autonomous maritime vessels for defence purposes.
Navalt is recognized as a leading developer of electric and solar-powered vessels in India, and this agreement marks a significant step towards expanding green maritime technology cooperation between Cyprus and India, potentially extending across the Mediterranean region.
