Court upholds detention of 26-year-old in Cyprus opiates trafficking case
A 26-year-old man of Asian origin has lost his appeal against detention pending trial on charges related to possession and trafficking of poppy pods used in opium production, the Cyprus Court of Appeal announced. The man was arrested during an island-wide drug crackdown that saw 21 arrests and the seizure of approximately 60kg of opiates.
The Court of Appeal confirmed that there was sufficient evidence to justify the suspect's continued detention, including police testimony about the discovery of poppy pods and mixtures at his residence. Despite the defendant's claim that he was unaware of the illegality of the substances, the court stressed that his personal circumstances did not outweigh public interest.
The initial order to keep the suspect in custody until November remains in effect as the trial approaches. Authorities continue efforts to combat drug trafficking across Cyprus, aiming to reduce illegal narcotics distribution through rigorous enforcement.
