New Larnaca Dhekelia Road Opens After 26 Years, Boosting Accessibility and Tourism
The new Larnaca Dhekelia road officially opened to traffic on July 24, marking the culmination of a €14.8 million project aimed at improving accessibility and tourism in the region. The project features a 3.25-kilometre main road with four traffic lanes and 4.5 kilometres of service roads, with the latter expected to be completed by the end of October.
Construction began in September 2022 and, despite significant delays, was completed earlier than anticipated in mid-July 2024. District public works engineer Lazaros Lazarou emphasized the project's importance for Larnaca, highlighting its potential to attract new investments and enhance road safety. The inclusion of modern cycle lanes also represents an effort to promote sustainable transportation.
The Larnaca Commerce Chamber welcomed the opening, expressing relief and optimism after decades of planning. The new road aims to facilitate better traffic flow and support economic growth in the area, marking a significant infrastructure upgrade for the district.
