Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas vows accountability for Kalo Chorio firing range wildfire
Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas has pledged that those responsible for the wildfire at the Kalo Chorio firing range on July 27 will be held accountable according to the law. He made the statement after receiving the National Guard’s disciplinary investigation report but refrained from commenting further as the police’s criminal inquiry remains active. The wildfire erupted during ammunition disposal operations, scorching around 120 hectares and prompting evacuations in Ayia Anna and Psevdas.
Palmas emphasized the importance of respecting the ongoing police investigation and stated that any assignments of responsibility will follow once all evidence is reviewed. The police findings are expected to be submitted to the Legal Service within the next week. Meanwhile, affected communities have renewed appeals for relocating the firing range, and the Defence Ministry has committed to covering all damage caused by the fire.
