Extradition Hearing for Azerbaijani Man in Cyprus Postponed Due to Interpreter Absence
The extradition hearing of Rashad Sultanov, a 45-year-old Azerbaijani man wanted by the United Kingdom on espionage charges, was postponed again in Limassol due to the absence of an Azerbaijani-language interpreter. Proceedings were conducted with English to Russian interpretation in the interpreter's absence. The court has scheduled three new hearing dates for the following week.
Sultanov, who has been held on remand since June 2025, is facing charges linked to assisting a foreign intelligence service and entering a prohibited place with intent to harm the UK, carrying up to 14 years in prison under UK law. His defense is waiting for confirmation that a UK lawyer has been appointed to access the case file under the Trade and Cooperation Agreement framework.
Prosecutors confirmed that efforts to find an Azerbaijani interpreter were unsuccessful. Sultanov, who appeared in court wearing a T-shirt depicting Palestinian activist Saber Al-Askar, has refused consent to extradition, meaning a full hearing will examine the UK’s request, which alleges his connections with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
