Larnaca community leaders demand safety priority following Kalo Chorio firing range fire
Following a fire that broke out at the Kalo Chorio firing range last week, representatives from Larnaca communities have expressed serious concerns over its continued operation. The fire, which started during a National Guard live-fire exercise on July 27, spread to neighbouring villages, burning approximately 120 acres and leading to the evacuation of Ayia Anna and Psevdas.
Community leaders emphasized that the safety of residents is non-negotiable and raised numerous questions that they expect authorities to address. Stavroulla Vassiliou, leader of the Tremithos community, noted that despite assurances from Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas and National Guard Chief Lieutenant General Emmanuel Theodorou, key safety concerns remain unresolved. A follow-up meeting with the Defence Minister is scheduled for mid-September to determine future actions.
Additionally, MPs have been prompted to register the issue in parliament, signaling growing legislative attention. The communities are demanding not only the protection of residents and property but also consideration for environmental preservation as discussions continue.
