The government supports initiatives like cadetship stipends and scholarships to smooth the transition from education to employment. Additionally, campaigns and scholarships target increasing women's representation, which currently remains low globally at 1% of seafarers at sea but is improving notably in Greece, where women constitute 8.1% of seafarers and 12.7% of cadets. However, global officer shortages persist, with an estimated deficit of nearly 40,000 certified officers by 2026, emphasizing the urgency of early engagement, comprehensive training, and better working conditions to attract and retain maritime professionals.
