Additionally, fires contribute significantly to climate change by releasing large amounts of carbon dioxide and reducing the forest’s carbon capture capacity. Forest officials develop management plans to restore burned state forest areas, though assistance on private land requires landowner consent.
Kyriakou highlighted the ‘Planting for the Climate’ initiative, which offers free basic tree and shrub species to support reforestation efforts. This program is available to both communities and individuals and encourages plantings on public or private land, with planting plans required for requests exceeding fifty plants.
