Cyprus Launches €493 Million Plan to Tackle Limassol’s Severe Traffic Congestion

Limassol's worsening traffic crisis has reached a critical point, prompting the government to take decisive action. A new initiative aims to develop a comprehensive long-term plan for the entire Limassol district, incorporating local municipal needs into national infrastructure strategies. This move comes after years of inadequate responses to the city's rapid residential and commercial growth that have left thousands of residents struggling with daily congestion.

Recently, the Transport Minister met with mayors of the greater Limassol area to discuss coordinated efforts. The government proposed a €493 million budget for a series of short- and medium-term projects designed to deliver immediate relief. These projects include targeted traffic measures, upgrades to critical junctions, construction and improvement of roundabouts, and the implementation of smart traffic management systems such as Urban Traffic Control (UTC).

Officials emphasize the importance of timely execution without bureaucratic delays to ensure the city’s arteries become less congested and more liveable. The plan marks a significant step towards resolving Limassol’s longstanding traffic problems, aiming to make the city’s day-to-day commuting experience more manageable and sustainable for the future.
