Former Disy Leader Criticizes President Christodoulides Over Cyprus Issue Progress and Crossing Points
Former Disy president Averof Neophytou sharply criticized President Nikos Christodoulides' handling of the Cyprus issue, stressing that the priority should be advancing reunification talks rather than the president’s personal plans, including whether he takes a summer holiday. Neophytou warned that failure to progress could cause the president to "reckon with history."
Neophytou expressed support for genuine efforts toward a solution but highlighted the lack of progress on opening new crossing points, a commitment Christodoulides made in March 2025. Despite plans to open four crossing points agreed upon during talks in Geneva, negotiations have stalled, with the north insisting all four be opened simultaneously, rejecting the government's proposal to start with only two crossings.
This deadlock persisted despite UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres' visit to Cyprus last week. Neophytou urged that without progress on these crossing points, the return of refugees to their properties and resolution of the Cyprus problem will face significant delays.
