Hotel bookings in Cyprus are gradually returning to a more normal pace, although August bookings remain about 10% behind last year, according to the heads of two major tourism bodies. Operators are relying heavily on last-minute demand and offering discounts to maintain occupancy, particularly amid concerns linked to regional instability and economic pressures in Europe. The Association of Cyprus Tourist Enterprises (Stek) and the Cyprus Hoteliers Association (Pasyxe) reported mixed but cautiously optimistic forecasts for the remainder of the 2026 tourist season.
While some hotels in the Famagusta district face ongoing challenges, overall cancellations have stabilized within normal levels. The industry is focused on the financial results expected by the end of October, marking the conclusion of the summer season. Preparations for 2027 are already underway, with most hotel units having signed contracts, aiming to reach the occupancy and revenue levels of 2025.
Challenges remain, including a widening booking shortfall projected for September and the need to boost tourism beyond the summer months through autumn and December. Officials emphasized the importance of increased promotion and advertising in key European markets to dispel travel uncertainties and counteract economic constraints like high living costs and airfares.
