Prison Officers' Union Warns of Severe Safety and Staffing Issues at Central Prisons
The prison officers’ union ISOTITA has warned of extremely serious conditions at the Central Prisons, highlighting drug trafficking, violence, and critical understaffing. The union cited a recent incident where an officer was exposed to detainee blood during a violent altercation, resulting in months of medical monitoring for possible bloodborne diseases.
ISOTITA criticized the Ministry of Justice for ignoring repeated requests for improved staff protection and adequate medical protocols. The union emphasized that the violence and health risks are foreseeable and preventable, given documented understaffing and unsafe working conditions. It demands immediate measures including proper protective equipment, staff recruitment, decongestion efforts, and humane working conditions.
Despite announcements of a new prison complex slated for completion by 2030, the union stressed this timeline leaves staff exposed for years. It called on authorities to implement swift, concrete actions to safeguard officers’ health and safety now, rather than waiting for long-term infrastructure projects to conclude.
