Limassol government launches multilevel campaign to reduce water consumption by 10 per cent
The Limassol district government (EOA) has introduced a comprehensive plan aimed at reducing water consumption by 10 percent in response to ongoing climate challenges. The campaign, which began in March, uses social media, videos, TV spots, radio messages, and outdoor posters to encourage the community to save water. Key elements include humorous advice from local actor Orpheas Solomou and emotional appeals highlighting the Kouris reservoir, promoting a collective responsibility towards water conservation.
Additional initiatives such as educational materials for children, including a storybook, puppet show, and quizzes, are planned to further raise awareness. Infrastructure upgrades are also underway, including the replacement of 100 km of water pipes in Limassol’s city centre starting August 6, to improve efficiency and reduce losses.
Agriculture ministry permanent secretary Andreas Gregoriou emphasized the importance of adopting non-conventional water sources such as desalination and treated sewage for irrigation. He underlined the urgent need to adapt to climate change impacts in Cyprus, noting an annual 6 percent rise in water demand, stressing that cultural shifts in consumption habits are essential for sustainable water management.
