Hourly Paid Government Employees Threaten Nationwide Strike Over Pay Dispute

Hourly paid government employees in Cyprus have announced a nationwide 24-hour strike scheduled for September 17 unless the government presents a revised pay proposal. The unions rejected the state's latest offer for a new collective agreement from 2025 to 2027, which included zero salary increases despite strong economic growth and rising living costs.

The unions represent around 7,500 hourly paid employees, including healthcare and school staff. They highlighted that wage increases have been minimal over the past 17 years and argued that pay levels are insufficient to cover living expenses. Union leaders stressed that many workers earn less than €1,000 per month and called for general salary increases, warning that the strike could disrupt essential public services.

This development follows a previous 24-hour strike in June, when workers protested at the presidential palace demanding higher wages. Union officials urged the government to submit an improved proposal to avoid industrial action, emphasizing their commitment to reaching a consensus.
