Cyprus government to manage vehicle removal in serious traffic accidents under new rapid response plan
The Cyprus government will take on the responsibility for removing vehicles involved in serious traffic accidents through a new rapid response system, Justice Minister Costas Fitiris announced. The measure, part of the proposed "Nestor" plan, aims to minimize road closures by enabling the state to quickly clear accident scenes without waiting for insurance companies to arrange towing services. Insurance companies will subsequently reimburse the government for recovery costs.
The plan includes thorough documentation of accident scenes using photographs, video, and drones before vehicle removal, ensuring evidence is preserved for police investigations and insurance claims. It also covers heavy vehicles such as lorries, with specialist cranes deployed as necessary. The initiative follows disruptions caused by a seven-hour highway closure last month and aims to improve coordination between emergency services, including police, fire brigades, and private contractors.
Authorities plan to finalize the scheme this week and conduct a live exercise in August involving cranes and drones. The government will also establish contracts with private companies to ensure rapid mobilization of specialist equipment, thereby enhancing overall response times and public safety on Cyprus roads.
