Second person arrested in Kornos forest arson investigation involving fireworks
Police have arrested a second suspect in connection with an attempted forest arson case in the Kornos area. The new arrest involves a 28-year-old Brazilian man, the partner of the initially detained 26-year-old Brazilian, both accused of setting off ground fireworks inside the forest. The 28-year-old was held under a court warrant and has been remanded in custody.
The incident occurred on August 2, when witnesses saw two individuals leave the forest area shortly after a fire had started. A passerby managed to extinguish the blaze before it spread further. Following testimonies, authorities obtained a court warrant for the 26-year-old’s arrest, with charges including conspiracy to commit a felony and attempted forest arson. Both suspects remain in custody while investigations continue under the Kofinou Regional Police Station.
Chief Fire Officer Nikos Longinos stated that a female driver witnessed the fire being ignited using fireworks and helped control it before emergency services arrived. The 26-year-old is set to appear before Larnaca District Court for a remand hearing.
