Nicosia DLGO and Israel’s Mekorot Sign Cooperation on Sustainable Water Management
The Nicosia District Local Government Organisation (DLGO) and Israel’s National Water Company, Mekorot, have signed a Memorandum of Cooperation aimed at exchanging expertise in sustainable water resource management. The partnership focuses on reducing unbilled water and enhancing water supply systems, with Nicosia’s unbilled water currently estimated at 19-20%, the lowest in Cyprus but still targeted for reduction.
The agreement was signed by Konstantinos Giorkatzis, President of Nicosia DLGO, and Barak Gruber, CEO of Mekorot Development & Enterprise, with Israel’s Ambassador to Cyprus, Oren Anolik, present. Both parties highlighted the shared challenges of water scarcity due to climate change and emphasized their commitment to innovative water management practices, including desalination, water reuse, and smart water networks.
This cooperation builds on Mekorot’s previous contributions to Cyprus, such as the Larnaca and Limassol desalination plants, and aims to foster knowledge exchange to improve water security and infrastructure resilience. The partnership marks a strategic step to address environmental, economic, and social dimensions of water scarcity for both countries in the Mediterranean region.
