Customs seize untaxed cigarettes from Israeli passenger at Deryneia crossing
Customs officers at the Deryneia crossing point stopped a Turkish Cypriot taxi carrying an Israeli passenger on August 2 during routine Green Line Regulation checks. During the search, officers found 14 cartons of cigarettes, each containing 200 cigarettes, without the mandatory Greek and Turkish health warnings or the security features required for legally taxed tobacco products.
The absence of the proper markings indicated the cigarettes were untaxed and duty-unpaid. Customs seized the tobacco products, which will undergo the prescribed destruction process. The passenger was initially arrested for offenses related to the illegal tobacco but was released after agreeing to an out-of-court settlement and paying a fine of €840.
