Cyprus Government and PASYDY to Establish Joint Committee on Public Service Reform
The Cyprus government and the Cyprus Public Servants Union (PASYDY) have agreed to form a joint committee to address challenges arising from public service reform. The committee, which will include representatives from the Finance Ministry, the Public Service Commission, and PASYDY, is tasked with submitting detailed proposals by the end of September.
Discussions during the meeting at the Presidential Palace, attended by President Nikos Christodoulides and key ministers, focused on digital transformation, infrastructure improvements, career progression for low-paid workers, and the status of fixed-term and permanent employees. While PASYDY did not request pay raises, some reform elements, such as converting fixed-term contracts to permanent ones, may involve financial costs.
Particular concern was raised over poor conditions in several government buildings, including the Interior Ministry and Social Welfare Services. Plans are underway for gradual infrastructure improvements, contingent on state budgets. Meanwhile, issues related to interdepartmental promotions and examinations are expected to see concrete proposals soon. Separate future meetings will address matters concerning the police and fire services.
