Deputy Culture Minister Visits Nicosia Venetian Walls Conservation Site
Deputy Culture Minister Lina Kassianidou recently inspected the ongoing conservation efforts on Nicosia’s Venetian Walls, focusing on the southern section between Caraffa and Podocataro bastions. Specialist teams from the Department of Antiquities are conducting extensive restoration work, emphasizing traditional materials and techniques to maintain the walls' historical authenticity.
The project highlights the crucial role of the Department’s stonemasons, who are carefully replacing and restoring worn stones to ensure the fortifications’ long-term preservation. The Venetian Walls, built by the Venetians, remain one of the most significant monuments in Cyprus’s capital, featuring 11 bastions and serving as a prime example of Renaissance military architecture in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Efforts to stabilize and conserve these historic fortifications demonstrate a committed approach to safeguarding Nicosia’s cultural heritage, ensuring the walls continue to stand as a defining feature of the city’s old town.
