Cyprus Institute unveils first detailed inventory of tree biomass and carbon stocks to guide climate adaptation
The Cyprus Institute has published the island's first comprehensive inventory of tree biomass and carbon stocks, providing crucial data for assessing the impacts of droughts and forest fires. This breakthrough supports improved management of natural resources and climate adaptation strategies in Cyprus.
PhD researcher Anna Zenonos highlighted that this new capability to monitor trees with unprecedented precision is vital as climate change pressures increase in the eastern Mediterranean. The study found that although Cyprus' forests have increased their carbon storage over the past seven years, these gains were negated by losses from recurring droughts and fires. It estimates that fires have affected over 360,000 trees recently, leading to a loss of 300,000 tons of biomass and 140,000 tons of stored carbon.
The inventory was developed using an artificial intelligence model that combined field data from the forestry department. By measuring biomass—organic material stored in plants—this research underscores the important role of trees in carbon dioxide absorption, climate mitigation, and cooling local microclimates.
