Cyprus Blood Bank Urges Public to Donate Amid Rising Demand During Summer
The head of Cyprus’s Blood Bank Centre, Androula Panayiotou, has called on the public to donate blood as daily demand has surged from 150 to 350 vials. This increase is driven by more complex surgeries and higher transfusion needs among patients, including those with thalassemia.
Panayiotou highlighted the ongoing challenge of lower donor turnout during August due to summer holidays, a trend that threatens to deplete reserves. She emphasized that illnesses and accidents continue regardless of the season, and the Blood Bank relies heavily on community support, particularly from young donors.
To facilitate donations, the Blood Bank has extended operating hours on Saturdays at Geri and Engomi stations and organized drives in various locations. While there are currently no shortages, a steady flow of donors is crucial to meet the continuous high demand and support scheduled surgeries and patients with chronic needs.
