Foot-and-mouth disease outbreak in Cyprus under control with over 90% vaccination coverage

The foot-and-mouth disease outbreak in Cyprus is currently under control and is in retreat, according to Dimitris Epaminondas, president of the Pancyprian Veterinary Association. Following extensive testing, all but two units have returned negative results, with over 90% of animal units across Cyprus having completed double vaccination. The second phase of surveillance has checked more than 30% of units, reflecting a positive epidemiological outlook.

High summer temperatures are aiding in virus destruction, but grazing remains a risk for spreading the disease. Authorities caution against relaxing restrictions until epidemiological surveillance reaches a very high level. In Paphos district, vaccination efforts are progressing as planned, and a reconstruction plan aimed at increasing biosecurity in clustered livestock areas is underway.

Preparations for winter include continued vaccinations and biosecurity measures to prevent a resurgence. Farmers are urged to clean their units during summer and vaccinate their animals to protect the wider community and minimize recurrence risks. Epaminondas emphasized that refusal to vaccinate could worsen the situation and highlighted the importance of cooperation for collective safety.
