Cyprus boosts efforts to combat illegal construction waste dumping with new action plan and €1 million aid

The environment department in Cyprus is intensifying its fight against illegal dumping of construction and demolition waste, a major environmental challenge, deputy director Elena Stylianopoulou announced. An ongoing action plan aimed at improving waste management is already underway, focusing on comprehensive sector compliance rather than isolated incidents.

The Council of Ministers recently approved €1 million in emergency aid for the third year running to clean up illegal dumping sites, addressing both environmental hazards and fire risks linked to such locations. The department is targeting the entire waste management chain—from property owners and contractors to disposal facilities—with regular inspections focused on construction sites.

Efforts also include stricter penalties, with maximum fines for illegal dumping doubled to €40,000 earlier this year. A new GPS tracking system for waste skip owners, postponed from April, is expected to launch early next year to further discourage illegal disposal.
