Elam leader criticizes confidence-building measures and federal solution for Cyprus problem
Elam leader Christos Christou expressed strong opposition to confidence-building measures and the federal solution model for resolving the Cyprus problem during Monday’s National Council meeting. He stated that such measures, often undertaken unilaterally by the Republic of Cyprus to coax Turkey into negotiations, have been ineffective for decades. Christou warned that a bizonal, bicommunal federation would create an unstable state similar to Bosnia and Herzegovina’s current confederal structure, which he described as dysfunctional.
Christou also criticized UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres' recent visit to Cyprus, saying it failed to persuade Turkey to alter its stance and contribute to resolving the dispute. He dismissed optimistic reports suggesting a rapid resolution of the Cyprus problem, urging caution and reliance on verified information rather than assumptions.
