Cyprus President Christodoulides ready for weekly talks with Turkish Cypriot leader to advance peace process
President Nikos Christodoulides has expressed readiness to hold weekly meetings with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman to enable progress toward convening a new enlarged meeting on the Cyprus problem. The goal is to resume negotiations and achieve a resolution, with the talks expected to build on the progress made during previous UN-backed efforts. Christodoulides informed the National Council that he will remain available to the United Nations throughout August to cooperate closely in this direction.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres recently emphasized the need to continue talks from where they were suspended in 2017 at Crans-Montana, urging both sides to ‘‘cover the last mile’’ in resolving outstanding issues. Guterres’ framework has gained support aligned with the positions of Greece and Turkey, highlighting the importance of adhering to UN parameters during negotiations.
Turkish Cypriot leader Erhurman renewed his call for weekly meetings, describing them as necessary ‘‘homework’’ to facilitate the upcoming ‘‘five-plus-one’’ meeting involving the two Cypriot communities, guarantor powers, and the UN. Both leaders appear committed to creating the conditions for a successful resumption of talks aimed at achieving a sustainable settlement.
