Cyprus among EU leaders with 45% land under desertification affecting 61% of population
According to a recent European Commission Joint Research Centre report, 45% of Cyprus's land is under desertification conditions, one of the highest rates in the European Union. The report highlights that 61% of Cyprus’s population, approximately 0.7 million people, live in areas affected by desertification, the highest share of any EU country.
The report, which updates the mapping of land degradation and desertification across the EU, also identifies Spain and Greece as significantly affected, with 53% and 36% of their land under desertification conditions respectively. Land degradation, defined as the long-term loss of land productivity, is exacerbated by human activities and natural causes, while desertification specifically impacts dry areas.
Projections indicate that desertification risk will increase due to climate change, with expected reductions in rainfall and more frequent droughts. To monitor this, the EU Soil Observatory is developing a desertification data dashboard that will provide updated statistics and maps on land degradation and its impact across the EU.
