More than 100 livestock farms affected by the foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) outbreak in Cyprus have received compensation, Agriculture Minister Christos Senekis confirmed. The government has paid significant sums to help farmers recover losses caused by culling approximately 80,000 animals since the disease’s emergence in February 2026. Only a few compensation cases remain unresolved, with the process expected to conclude soon.
Attention is now focused on rebuilding and reorganizing the livestock sector to prevent future outbreaks. The government awaits recommendations from a scientific committee led by Stavros Malas to restructure farming operations toward increased resilience and sustainability. Experts highlight the need to improve biosecurity by reconsidering the close proximity of livestock units, which currently facilitates disease spread.
Dr. Dimitris Epaminondas, president of the Cyprus Veterinary Association, emphasized integrating vaccination and safety measures alongside better farm spacing. Changes aim to mitigate risks intensified by climate change, which increases threats to animal health and economic stability.
