Greek-Cyprus Electricity Interconnector Project Moves into Decisive Implementation Phase
The Greek-Cyprus electricity interconnection project, known as the Great Sea Interconnector, is entering a decisive phase toward implementation, according to Cypriot Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letympiotis. Speaking on the Greek television channel OPEN, he highlighted the significance of a French company's participation, emphasizing that it strengthens not only the technical aspect but also the geopolitical and diplomatic dimensions of the project.
Letympiotis underlined that the French involvement enhances the diplomatic power of Cyprus, Greece, France, and the European Union collectively. He stressed the project's European character, noting it is not solely a bilateral affair but a matter of common European interest, prioritized by the European Commission for regional energy connectivity.
Regarding concerns about potential Turkish reactions during exploratory phases, he said Athens and Nicosia will initially rely on diplomacy but affirmed Cyprus will firmly protect its sovereign rights. On the financial side, Greece and Cyprus have requested the European Investment Bank update technical and economic data, with updated studies expected soon to guide the project's progress.
