Kouris reservoir receives 118,000 cubic metres of water amid cautious water management in Cyprus
Cyprus' reservoirs received approximately 140,000 cubic metres of water in a 24-hour period, with Kouris reservoir alone accounting for about 118,000 cubic metres, the Water Development Department (WDD) reported. Despite this influx, the department emphasized that the recent rainfall will not significantly alter water planning measures, as inflow levels remain below the record highs observed in 2019. Currently, reservoir storage stands at 120 million cubic metres, representing 40% of total capacity.
Executive engineer Alexios Frangeskos noted that while farmers may reduce irrigation frequency due to the rains, the overall water demand remains high, requiring about 300,000 to 350,000 cubic metres daily for urban supply, over 75% of which is met by desalination. The WDD does not foresee additional water availability from the southern pipeline for the upcoming potato planting season, given the need to evaluate water sufficiency over a three-year horizon. Measures to expand recycled water use, particularly in Limassol and new areas like Anthoupolis in eastern Nicosia, are underway to support irrigation and urban demand in the coming years.
