Turkish opposition criticizes recognition of Greek Cypriot delegation at Istanbul Geography Olympiad
Ayyuce Turkes Tas, a senior Turkish opposition politician, has condemned the recognition of a Greek Cypriot delegation as the 'Republic of Cyprus' at the International Geography Olympiad held in Istanbul. She described the incident, where the Greek Cypriot flag was raised and the delegation presented as representatives of Cyprus, as "unacceptable" and questioned the absence of intervention by Turkish officials during the ceremony.
Turkes Tas criticized the event as undermining the rights of Turkish Cypriots and the official Turkish stance on Cyprus, demanding accountability and immediate action. The four-member Greek Cypriot team won two bronze medals, with participants expressing pride in representing Cyprus.
The incident has not drawn a response from Turkey's youth deputy minister Enes Eminoglu, who attended the ceremony. The International Geography Olympiad is a competition for teenagers aged 16 to 19, involving written, multimedia, and field study tests.
