Cyprus raises disability benefits by 10%, expands eligibility with new Personal Assistance and Home Care Allowance
Cyprus has increased disability benefits by 10% retroactively from January 1, with the new Personal Assistance and Home Care Allowance launching on August 1. The adjustment merges six existing benefits, including the Blind Persons’ Allowance and Disability Allowance, ensuring no current recipient loses money. Back payments will be made as a one-off to cover the increase from January, with exact payment dates to be announced.
The reform aims to help people with disabilities live more independently and participate more fully in society. New applicants eligible under specific criteria, such as children under 18 with disabilities and individuals living with severe mobility issues or paraplegia, can now apply. The government plans to gradually separate disability support from income tests to provide assistance based on need rather than financial status, targeting an additional 5,000 beneficiaries over three years.
In addition to financial support, recipients can now choose their own personal assistants or home carers to better tailor their day-to-day help. For inquiries, individuals can contact disability services through designated phone lines or local offices.
