Visitors violate nesting season restrictions by setting up tents on Lara beach

Despite clear restrictions to protect nesting sea turtles, bathers set up umbrellas and tents on Lara beach on Wednesday. The beach is part of the Lara-Toxeftra protected area, where temporary structures are banned from June through September during the turtle nesting season. Authorities had already conducted patrols earlier in the day, but reports indicated that visitors ignored the rules.

Fisheries officers returned to the beach to remind visitors of the regulations, with signs throughout the area continuing to warn that the prohibitions are actively enforced. Restrictions include no overnight stays on the beach and limits on fishing, which is only permitted from the shore during this period.

Additional year-round prohibitions, such as no vehicle access, no fires, and bans on pollution and sand crab collection, aim to safeguard this critical breeding habitat. The measures protect the endangered sea turtles that rely on Lara and Toxeftra beaches as one of Cyprus’ most important nesting sites.
