Turkish Cypriot briefing proceeds despite Greek Cypriot efforts to deter diplomats
The Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman’s undersecretary, Mehmet Dana, held a diplomatic briefing at the Home for Cooperation in Nicosia’s buffer zone despite attempts by the Republic of Cyprus’ foreign ministry to discourage attendance. Diplomats reportedly attended the event in significant numbers, contrary to the Greek Cypriot side’s phone calls urging embassies not to participate.
Erhurman criticized these efforts, stating that such actions undermine trust between the two communities on the island. He noted that similar briefings had been held by Greek Cypriot negotiators and emphasized that international diplomats are well-informed by listening to both sides. He called on the United Nations and the European Union to observe these dynamics and highlighted upcoming meetings aimed at advancing confidence-building measures and peace talks.
Looking ahead, Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot officials are scheduled to meet in the coming days, with an anticipated leaders’ meeting next week. This session aims to prepare for a larger, multilateral meeting involving guarantor nations and the UN, focusing on substantive political discussions and practical steps such as the potential opening of crossing points between the island’s divided communities.
