Serbian EXIT music company withdraws from Kyrenia Castle festival amid political pressure
Serbian music company EXIT has withdrawn from the planned Nexus electronic music festival at Kyrenia Castle, following diplomatic and political pressure. The event, scheduled for September 18 and featuring international acts like Eric Prydz and Mathame, will no longer take place. The decision came after Elam MEP Geadis Geadi intervened, contacting Serbian embassies and government officials to express concerns.
Geadi facilitated discussions with the organisers, who apologized and agreed to withdraw from the event. The withdrawal followed strong opposition from Cypriot politicians, including Disy MEP Loukas Fourlas and Kyrenia mayor Akis Violaris, who highlighted the historical and political sensitivities of hosting a festival at the contested site. The Cyprus foreign ministry also engaged diplomatically on the matter.
EXIT had planned Nexus as part of its world tour and promoted the choice of Kyrenia Castle as a key historic location. However, political resistance emphasized the risks of cultural events potentially legitimizing the administration in the occupied north. Official confirmation of the withdrawal is expected from EXIT shortly.
