Cyprus approves €25.5 million plan for advanced fire-prevention system uniting multiple agencies
Cyprus’s Cabinet has approved a €25.5 million investment plan to implement a comprehensive fire-prevention and surveillance system over the next three years. The initiative integrates the Forestry Department, Fire Service, National Guard, and Civil Defence under a unified operational framework for the first time, aiming to enhance rapid response and prevention using cutting-edge technology.
Building on a successful pilot phase, the new plan includes installing 31 electro-optical sensor systems, tethered observation balloons with fire-detection sensors, and expanding the MANET wireless communication network. The initiative also encompasses new mobile command centers, fire-spread simulation software, upgraded operations centers, and a modernized firefighting vehicle fleet.
The project exempts tender procedures for sensitive network components on national security grounds, awarding contracts directly to existing contractors. Staffing will increase with 33 new civil service positions, and funding for 2026 will come from savings, with future budgets accommodating ongoing expenses. This marks a significant step toward strengthening Cyprus’s fire emergency preparedness and inter-agency coordination.
