Cyprus ranks mid-tier in EU minimum wage after adjusting for purchasing power

According to Eurostat data from July 2026, Cyprus's minimum wage places it in the middle tier among European Union countries when adjusted for purchasing power standards (PPS). Cyprus falls within the group whose minimum wages range between 1,000 and under 1,500 PPS, alongside countries like Greece, Malta, Portugal, and Romania. This ranking reflects wage levels once differences in cost of living are accounted for, presenting a more accurate picture of purchasing power than nominal amounts.

The data reveals that Cyprus dropped four places in the purchasing power ranking compared to its nominal euro minimum wage position. Eurostat explained that adjusting for cost differences narrows wage disparities across member states significantly. For instance, while Luxembourg has the highest nominal minimum wage, the gap shrinks considerably after PPS adjustment.

Despite overall wage stagnation amid inflation pressures—Cyprus recording 5.4% inflation between January and July 2026—eight EU countries, including Romania and Estonia, saw increases in minimum wages during this period. Eurostat’s analysis highlights the importance of considering purchasing power when comparing European wage standards.
