West Nile virus case confirmed in ICU at Nicosia General Hospital
A patient has tested positive for West Nile virus and is currently being treated in the ICU at Nicosia General Hospital, the Health Ministry confirmed Thursday. Further details about the patient’s age or circumstances have not been disclosed. West Nile virus is primarily spread through the bite of infected mosquitoes, which acquire the virus by feeding on infected birds.
The virus is not transmitted through casual contact or between hospital patients and healthcare staff. Symptoms typically appear within two to fourteen days after a mosquito bite, with most infections causing no or mild symptoms. Serious neurological complications occur in less than one percent of cases, mainly affecting people over 50 or those with weakened immune systems.
The Health Ministry urged residents to take preventive measures such as wearing protective clothing during evening hours, using insect repellent, installing window screens, and eliminating stagnant water to reduce mosquito breeding sites. Sporadic West Nile virus cases in Cyprus usually occur during the summer months.
