The Cyprus air traffic controllers’ union has raised concerns over flight safety due to unauthorized Turkish air force aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicles operating frequently near critical flight routes and the Larnaca and Paphos airports. These incursions are reported to occur almost constantly, affecting airspace security around the island.
Cyprus' airspace is disputed, with Turkish Cypriot authorities managing their own air traffic control from northern Nicosia, while the Republic of Cyprus claims jurisdiction over the entire island's airspace. This situation has led to multiple conflicts, including conflicting notices to airmen (Notams) from both sides regarding military activities. The Turkish defence ministry has been conducting regular training flights in the nearby eastern Mediterranean international airspace.
