Cyprus receives mobile desalination units from UAE to boost water supply by 15,000 cubic metres daily
Cyprus has received free mobile desalination units from the United Arab Emirates as part of strategic cooperation between the two countries. The units are expected to increase daily desalinated water production by 15,000 cubic metres, addressing rising concerns over the island's water supply amid reduced rainfall and growing consumption.
The presidential palace emphasized that this development demonstrates the benefits of Cyprus’ international partnerships in tackling domestic challenges. Desalinated water is seen as the future of the island’s drinking water supply, with government plans to use desalination as the primary source and reserve reservoir water for irrigation.
However, some experts have criticized the government’s approach. Coastal engineer Xenia Loizidou described the import of mobile desalination units as a short-term fix, urging investment in infrastructure, water management, and a reduction in water-intensive activities like maintaining lawns and golf courses.
