Cyprus Construction Sector Shows Strength Amid EU-wide Activity Decline in June
Construction activity across the European Union weakened sharply in June 2026, with Eurostat reporting declines in both the euro area and EU overall. Seasonally adjusted construction production fell by 1.3% in the euro area and 1.0% across the EU compared with May, reversing the slight gains seen in May. Declines were observed broadly across building construction, civil engineering, and specialised construction activities, while several member states including Slovakia, Hungary, and France experienced the sharpest monthly drops.
Despite this broader downturn, Cyprus is entering the second half of 2026 from a position of considerable strength. The country recorded a 35.1% increase in building permits during the first four months of the year, with the value of permits rising by 46.1% to €1.67 billion. Residential units planned surged by 65%, driven largely by apartment developments. Construction gross value added rose by 4.9% year-on-year in Q1, while construction output increased by 0.7%.
Strong foreign and local housing demand, alongside a robust pipeline of projects, supports Cyprus's construction sector. However, labour shortages and rising costs remain challenges. Industry experts and Eurobank Research emphasize the resilience and growth potential while cautioning that supply constraints could limit the pace of expansion.
