Nicosia District to Receive €2 Million Fund for Dangerous Buildings Remediation
Nicosia’s District Local Government Organisation (DLGO) is set to receive around €2 million to tackle dangerous buildings in the district, pending guidance from the Interior Ministry on application procedures. The funds were initially approved for the Nicosia Municipality by the Fund for the Revitalisation of Border Areas but have since been transferred to the DLGO following local government reforms.
Joint inspections of dangerous buildings have already been conducted by the municipality and DLGO, accelerating the identification and classification of unsafe structures. The DLGO’s updated register reports 656 dangerous buildings and 55 in need of repair across the district, with 171 of the dangerous buildings located within the Nicosia municipal district. The DLGO has commenced issuing letters to property owners demanding corrective action, with further intervention dependent on responses received.
Additionally, the Cyprus Scientific and Technical Chamber has established a committee to assist in resolving disputes over professional assessments of building safety, aiming to streamline the process and avoid legal challenges. The municipality and DLGO share responsibilities, with the municipality addressing nuisance issues and the DLGO managing dangers related to structural integrity.
