Attorney General and National Guard Chief to Decide on Fire Investigation Outcomes at Kalo Chorio Range
The investigations into the fire at the Kalo Chorio firing range on July 27 are now under the authority of Attorney General and National Guard chief Emmanouil Theodorou. The fire endangered nearby Agia Anna and Pseudas communities. Two probes were conducted: one by Brigadier Savvas Stefanou for the National Guard and another by Cyprus Police, the latter already completed and submitted to the Attorney General's office.
The National Guard’s investigation details events from the controlled detonation of military material to the fire’s escalation. Decisions on possible disciplinary actions and further steps are anticipated next week based on the brigadier’s report. Initial reports suggest the fire spread due to an unexploded shell that detonated in the blaze, though this is not confirmed in official findings.
Preventive measures are underway, with plans for creating firebreaks around training sites to protect residential areas. The fire occurred during a joint exercise involving American soldiers and Cyprus Explosive Ordnance Disposal personnel, raising questions about safety protocols regarding vegetation clearance and blast containment methods.
