A 51-year-old monk accused of attacking a monastery employee with a paper cutter at the Ayios Neophytos monastery in Tala will remain in custody until October 7, following a court ruling in Paphos. The court cited the seriousness of the attempted murder charges and the risk of the suspect fleeing before trial. The attack allegedly occurred during a dispute over the ownership of a monastery cell on August 7.
The incident involved the monk resisting requests to surrender a cell he had been occupying for years, leading to a confrontation with the abbot and an employee. The 53-year-old employee tried to intervene in the struggle when the monk is said to have stabbed him in the neck and hand. A novice monk also attempted to restrain the accused and suffered injuries from the paper cutter according to police.
The monastery is cooperating with investigators, who have collected several statements so far. The accused reportedly admitted to reacting out of a desire to empty the cell himself, but his lawyer denies the allegations. The investigation continues as the court prepares for the case.
