Monk accused of attempted murder at Agios Neophytos Monastery remanded until October 7
A 51-year-old monk charged with attempted murder of a 53-year-old employee at the Agios Neophytos Monastery in Tala, Paphos, was remanded in custody until October 7 by the Paphos District Court on Tuesday. The monk also faces charges of illegal possession and transport of a weapon as well as carrying a knife. The October 7 date marks the scheduled appearance of the accused before the Paphos Assize Court. The monk's defense lawyer, Alexandros Alexandrou, argued against continued detention, citing the low likelihood of conviction and no flight risk, emphasizing the accused's deep ties to the community and long residence in Cyprus. The prosecution requested the remand citing the gravity of the alleged crime. Until the trial commences, the monk remains in custody.
