27-year-old man drowns off Lady’s Mile while retrieving phone from sea
A 27-year-old man of Egyptian origin died on August 15 after diving into the sea off Lady’s Mile, an area under British Bases jurisdiction, to retrieve his phone. The man, who was on board a catamaran with about 15 other people during an organized sea tour, was found floating unconscious and could not be revived despite first aid efforts.
A second man of Jordanian origin was also endangered in the incident but received immediate first aid and recovered. British Bases authorities have taken over the investigation, interviewing witnesses and the boat’s owner. Toxicology tests are expected to clarify the cause of death, with early indications pointing to accidental drowning.
This tragic event is the latest in a series of drownings in Cypriot waters this summer, highlighting ongoing safety concerns. In 2025, Cyprus has recorded 33 aquatic deaths, with non-Cypriots making up 61% of victims, according to recent national figures.
