Cyprus and Syria to launch new high-capacity undersea fibre-optic cable 'Ugarit 2' by 2028
A new undersea fibre-optic cable named "Ugarit 2" will replace the existing 1995 "Ugarit" link between south Cyprus and Syria. The upgraded connection is expected to commence operations in early 2028, significantly boosting communication capacity.
The cable system will link Pendaschinos in Larnaca district, Cyprus, to Tartus, Syria. Developed through a partnership among UNIFI Communications, the Cyprus Telecommunications Authority (Cyta), and the Syrian Telecommunications Establishment, "Ugarit 2" will feature 24 pairs of optical cables, starting with a capacity of 31 Tbps, with plans to expand to 370 Tbps.
This project marks Syria's first major international telecommunications infrastructure agreement since sanctions were lifted. The main contractor is American, authorized by the US Treasury to hold a 5% stake. Nokia will provide fibre-optic transmission equipment, and Prysmian will manage the undersea cable installation.
