Cyprus Launches €41.9M Tender for Smart Traffic Lights in Nicosia and Limassol
The Cyprus Transport Ministry has initiated a €41.9 million tender to procure and install smart traffic lights equipped with vehicle detection technology at 15 junctions in Nicosia and Limassol. The project, fully financed by Cyprus, aims to optimize traffic flow by dynamically adapting signal timings based on real-time vehicle detection, reducing congestion and travel times.
Work is set to commence in early October, with delivery expected within three months. The traffic signals will employ above-ground detectors covered by a minimum 24-month manufacturer’s warranty. These vehicle-actuated signals detect vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians, enabling signals to change or extend green lights based on current traffic demand rather than fixed timers.
The tender, titled ‘Supply, Installation and Operation of Vehicle-Actuated Signal Systems at Signal-Controlled Junctions in Nicosia and Limassol,’ has a submission deadline of September 18. The adaptive mode control system is expected to significantly enhance traffic efficiency on controlled junctions and adjoining roadways.
