Cyprus and India Strengthen Strategic Partnership Across Multiple Sectors
Cyprus is deepening its strategic partnership with India, enhancing cooperation in areas such as security, defence, counterterrorism, technology, innovation, shipping, education, and connectivity. The presidential palace highlighted that this growing relationship opens new markets, investments, and strategic perspectives for Cyprus, positioning the island as a key gateway between India and Europe for Indian businesses.
The partnership was solidified following a visit to India by President Nikos Christodoulides in May, where he met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and expressed support for India's bid to become a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council. Both leaders signed a joint declaration condemning terrorism in all forms, underscoring the significance of counterterrorism in their cooperation.
This strengthening of ties is also seen as a strategic move to balance Turkey and Pakistan's closer relations, particularly given the ongoing challenges in the region involving the Turkish Cypriot authorities. Cyprus aims to leverage its role in the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor to enhance its position in regional trade and connectivity.
