EU backs Great Sea Interconnector project amid Turkey opposition concerns
The European Union’s support for the Great Sea Interconnector project acts as a protective shield against anticipated opposition from Turkey, according to Cyprus government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis. Despite significant technical and economic challenges, recent progress has brought the project closer to completion, especially after French firm Meridiam acquired a majority stake.
Energy Minister Michael Damianos announced that a navtex warning will soon be issued to seafarers ahead of planned seabed surveys between Cyprus and Crete, to be conducted by a French vessel. Around 60 percent of the seabed surveys have been completed, with the remaining area located in disputed waters claimed by both Greece and Turkey.
These conflicting claims have previously led to Turkish naval presence in the area, complicating survey work. The European Commission continues to call on Turkey to commit to good neighborly relations and peaceful dispute resolution, emphasizing the geopolitical importance of the project.
